This, I assure you, once happened: Deep in the markets of Morocco, where the air is scented with spices and where shiny, mysterious treasures spill out from the stalls, I began an adventure spanning hundreds of miles. A bandit had followed me over a mountain and to the cusp of the Sahara, finally gaining on me within a medieval, open-air bazaar β a place teeming with fortune tellers, snake charmers, and exotic musicians of all sorts. It was there, amid a red-tinted haze, that my pursuer, possessing a knowledge of the terrain that I lacked, caught up to and cornered me. Words were exchanged; confrontational then surprisingly cordialβ¦for I discovered, to my immense relief, that this dangerous character was anything but β that the whole thing had been a colossal misunderstanding (He was an honest tour guide whose official government ID card Iβd inadvertently come into possession of. Oops!). That evening, after offering good wishes and many passionate apologies, I returned to the bustling bazaar and ate from pyramids of delicious dried fruit β dates, apricots, and golden raisins β and nuts like almonds and pistachios β¦and it was this experience, and exciting strolls and wanderings through marketplaces from Cairo and Delhi to Istanbul and Jerusalem, that inspired Faraway Spice, an exotic and delightfully savory granola designed to transport you to these distant and magical places. Featuring aromatic spices like cinnamon and cardamom and an assortment of dried fruits, this granola is also ideal for the Autumn and holiday seasons and perfect atop some unsweetened Greek yogurt.
